The DuSable Museum of African American History will honor the life and legacy of its Founder, Dr. Margaret Taylor Goss Burroughs with a Celebration entitled “In Her Own Words.” The Celebration will touch upon the different aspects of Burroughs through children’s workshops, symposia, musical and spoken word performances, and tours of our newest exhibitions, “Phenomenal Woman,” dedicated to Dr. Burroughs’ art, and “Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits.”

Visitors will also be able to leave their own tribute to Dr. Burroughs who was a teacher, mentor, friend and “mother figure” to thousands.

What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black? Burroughs the Educator. Moderated by Nora Blakely, Producing Artistic Director, Chocolate Chip Theatre Company. Panelists include: Dr. Anderson Thompson, Center for Inner City Studies; Reverend Helen Sinclair, Retired, Illinois Department of Corrections; Professor Timuel Black; and Howard Brookins, Retired State Legislator and former student.

What Will Your Legacy Be? Burroughs the Institution Builder. Moderated by Abena Joan Brown, President, eta Creative Arts Foundation. Panelists include: Professor Willie Dixon, historian; James R. Fennerty, lawyer and DuSable Museum Board Member; and Faheem Majeed, Curator and Acting Executive Director, South Side Community Arts Center.

2:00pm
“I woke up this morning feeling great; I woke up this morning in a socialist state.” Burroughs the Global Social Justice Activist. Moderated by Professor, Harold Rogers, City Colleges of Chicago. Panelists include: Dr. Noah Marcell, Professor of Russian History; Eleanor Chatman, President, Africa Travel Advisors; Phillip London, artist and photographer; and Billy Ocasio, Senior Advisor to Governor Pat Quinn.

3:30pm
“Art that doesn’t liberate is Meaningless.” Burroughs the Poet/Artist. Moderated by distinguished poet and playwright Useni Perkins. Panelists include: Runako Jahi, Artistic Director, eta Creative Arts Foundation; Susan Woodson, Founder, The Susan Woodson Gallery; and Jennie Scott Washington, artist.

4:45pm
“Reception and Public Reflections.” With award-winning vocalist Maggie Brown, and musician extraordinaire, Kelan Phil Cohran.

A special limited edition, Dr. Margaret Burroughs T-Shirt will be available for purchase. Admission to this event is FREE, however visitors are encouraged to either make a donation to the museum, or purchase a membership. The DuSable Museum is using this day to honor Dr. Burroughs. The formal memorial service is scheduled for February 2011.
