Family Day Celebration
The DuSable Museum will celebrate its newest exhibition “Sixteen Pieces,” during a day of special family oriented activities. The DuSable Family Day will provide a brief history of the Yoruba Culture (on which the exhibition is based) through arts and crafts, storytelling, children’s activities and musical performances. From the country of Nigeria, Yoruba people represent one of the largest groups taken during the TransAtlantic slave trade. As a result of forced migration, they brought and maintained many agricultural and religious elements of their culture. Highlights of the day include the following family-friendly activities and performances:
11:00 AM – Storyteller Niambi Muhammad will captivate youngsters’ imagination with traditional stories rooted in African traditions.
12:00 PM – Internationally renowned musician Ari Brown will entertain families with a musical performance combining the art forms of jazz and blues.
2:00 PM – The award-winning Chocolate Chips Theatre Company presents a musical journey through the 1930’s and 1940’s which takes inspiration from musical icons such as Robert Johnson and John Coltrane.
In addition; artists Robert Paige and DeMarcus Hyler will assist parents and children with designing their own mini-art booklet which highlights selected artifacts in the exhibition; visitors will learn the power of their names and how they reveal key secrets about their lives during a special Naming Ceremony; and docent-guided tours of the exhibition, “Sixteen Pieces” will also be offered. As a very special treat, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the DuSable Mobile Museum which will also be available throughout the day.
