Teachers Open House “Curators Talk with Chicago Teachers”
This “teachers only” event will feature the Visual Arts Director and Curator of the National Museum of Mexican Art’s, award-winning exhibition, “The African Presence In Mexico,” Cesareo Moreno.
Mr. Moreno will provide an in-depth lecture and slide presentation of “The African Presence in Mexico: From Yanga to the Present,” for classroom teachers. Teachers will also receive The African Presence in Mexico Teaching and Learning Guide with excerpts created especially for the DuSable Museum of African American History.
The guide will introduce students to a part of Mexico’s history that is often dismissed in both Mexican and American histories and will include topics such as: the Olmecs, famous Afro-Mexicans, and outstanding African American artist Elizabeth Catlett, whose sculptures reflect both African and Mexican cultures.
Workshops will include “The Music and Dance of Veracruz and Costa Chica” and “Exploring Racial Identity Through Poetry.”
