The DuSable Museum and Crown Royal Salute The Legendary Chuck D
The DuSable Museum of African American History and Crown Royal have joined forces to present a very special tribute to the legendary and iconic American rapper, author and producer, Chuck D. The event, “Crown Royal Black Salutes Chuck D,” will take place on Thursday, February 2, 2012, from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM at the Museum which is located at 740 East 56th Place (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago.
The genius behind such award-winning albums as: “Yo! Bum Rush the Show” (1987), “It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” (1988) and “Fear of a Black Planet”( 1990), to name a few, Chuck D has also appeared as a featured artist on other songs and albums having collaborated with artists such as Janet Jackson, Kool Moe Dee, The Dope Poet Society, Run-DMC, Ice Cube, Rage Against The Machine, John Mellencamp and many others. He helped to create politically and socially conscious rap music in the mid-1980s as the leader of the award-winning rap group, Public Enemy. Most recently Chuck D became involved in Let Freedom Sing: The Music of the Civil Rights Movement, a 3-CD box set from Time Warner. He wrote the introduction to the liner notes and is visiting colleges across the nation discussing the significance of the set. He’s also set to appear in a follow up film entitled, “Let Freedom Sing: The Music That Inspired the Civil Rights Movement.”
The evening tribute will include the unveiling of an exhibition of photos of Chuck D taken by acclaimed photographer Moses Mitchell, in addition to original paintings by artists Sam Kirk and Rahmaan Statik., which has been co-curated by renowned Chicago artist Sam Kirk and the DuSable Museum Chief Curator, Charles Bethea.
The evening’s highlight will be “ A Conversation with Chuck D” featuring Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson, Assistant Professor in Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara on the subjects of hip-hop activism, the 25th anniversary of Public Enemy and the soft launch of Chuck’s new business venture, Enemy Books.
Guests will also be able to savor complimentary Crown Royal cocktails, while enjoying the musical backdrop of WGCI-FM, DJ Timbuck and the band Zzaje.
