The Indignant Generation
Revisiting the Artistic Collectives of the Chicago Literary Renaissance
As the first venue of his whirlwind weekend tour in Chicago, Professor Lawrence Jackson of Emory University in Atlanta premieres, The Indignant Generation: A Narrative History of African American Writers and Critics, 1934-1960 at the DuSable Museum. This meticulously researched book is the highly anticipated literary history of a period desperately in need of thorough research and documentation. Dr. Jackson’s DuSable Museum lecture will focus on such famous Chicago Renaissance writers as Lorraine Hansberry, Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, and Arna Bontemps, to name a few.
Professor Jackson is a nationally recognized expert on twentieth century African American writers, and he is perhaps, most broadly known for his televised appearance in the broadcast of the PBS documentary, Ralph Ellison: An American Journey and the highly acclaimed book, Ralph Ellison: Emergence of Genius.
DuSable Museum’s Forgotten History Lecture Series runs February through October and invites local, national, and international speakers to provide presentations on specific topics based on current exhibitions, collection items, or cultural events.
