Over thirty-five years ago, the DuSable Museum opened an exhibition entitled Africa Speaks to showcase the diverse people and cultures and countries in Africa, but more importantly to illustrate the link that African Americans have to their ancestral legacy beyond the institution of slavery. Many of the original items in the exhibition were objects brought back from independent trips to Africa by several museum founders. DuSable has reinstalled this exhibition under the same title utilizing pieces collected over the past four decades totaling some 2,000 plus traditional and contemporary African artifacts. This enhanced version of the original Africa Speaks divides the continent into five regions: North, South, East, Central, and West. Each section is home to varied ethnic groups, everyone with different customs and traditions.
