Chisel + Stone
One of the first tools known to man was the hand axe. A stone purposely crafted to be used to cut, shear and cleave organic materials. Later, man learned to shape stone into representational objects of art. This exhibition examines several works of art—-sculpture crafted in stone—-from the DuSable Museum’s collection on how man, tools and techniques have evolved to shape a variety of stone material including marble, limestone, granite, and even caste concrete, through representational works by noted African American sculptures such as Chicago artists Marion Perkins.
Organized by DuSable Museum of African American History.
