PLANNING A VISIT

The DuSable Museum of African American History, a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate is located at 740 East 56th Place (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago. The Museum is only15 minutes south of downtown Chicago in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

All public areas of the Museum including galleries and most restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are available for use on a first come-first served basis with photo I.D. In addition, there is a complimentary check-room and lockers available for visitors.

Are reservations required for field trips and groups?
Yes. Please contact the Museum’s Group Sales Department at 773-947-0600 ext 225 for details on reservations for groups of ten or more. Chicago Public Schools students are admitted free of charge and one adult chaperone is required for each ten (10) students.

GETTING HERE

Can I get to the Museum on public transportation?
The DuSable Museum may be reached by CTA buses #3, #4 and #55, in addition to METRA, cab or car. For travel information you may call 312-836-7000 or visit www.transitchicago.com for detailed instructions.

Does the Museum have parking available?
There is limited free parking available in the Museum parking lot plus, additional on-street parking. Discounted parking is also available at the University of Chicago Hospital parking garage located directly across the street at 5631 South Cottage Grove Avenue.

DINING OPTIONS

Does the Museum have a restaurant or coffee shop?
The DuSable Museum does not have on-site dining options available; however, there are a number of excellent restaurants within walking distance of the Museum. Also, during the summer months guests are encouraged to bring picnic/brown bag meals and enjoy them in the Museum’s beautiful garden.

BECOMING A MEMBER

How do I become a Member of the DuSable Museum?
You may become a Member of the DuSable by: calling the Museum at 773-947-0600 ext 238; in person at the Museum; or by visiting the Museum website at www.dusablemuseum.org

When will I receive my Membership card? Can I visit the Museum without my card?
You will receive your Membership card within 2-3 weeks. You may visit the Museum without your card by presenting your name and I.D. and our Visitor Services Desk will confirm your Membership.

What are the benefits of membership?
Members at all levels receive complimentary admission. Family Memberships provide complimentary admission for 2 adults and up to four children. Please contact the Membership Department at 773-947-0600 ext 238 for additional information regarding Membership benefits.

Is my Membership tax deductible?
Yes, each Membership contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

I am interested in upgrading my Membership to a higher level. How should I do this?

Does the Museum offer a student or senior Membership?

Do I receive discounts with my Membership?
Members receive a 10% discount in The Museum Store and discounted admission on selected events and programs.

Do I receive reciprocal membership benefits at other museums with my DuSable Membership.
DuSable Museum members receive complimentary admission at; the Chicago History Museum; Adler Planetarium; National Museum of Mexican Art; PeggyNotabaert Nature Museum; and the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center

MUSEUM GUIDELINES

These guidelines are presented to ensure a first-class visitor experience and in combination with the instructions of our Security Officers your day at The DuSable will prove to be unforgettable! Please remember that the touching or handling of items on display is strictly prohibited and the following items are NOT permitted in the galleries:

  • Backpacks
  • Large tote bags/ Large shopping bags
  • Food or drink
  • Carts, bicycles, baby carriages
  • Toys
  • Cameras with tripods
  • Balloons
  • Animals (with the exception being service animals)

PHOTOGRAPHY

Am I allowed to take photographs in the Museum?
Non-flash photography and videos are permitted in all galleries of the Museum. However, restrictions may apply to some special/traveling exhibitions. We will post restrictions if and when they apply.

Are there restrictions on the type of equipment permitted?
Cameras should not exceed the size of a SLR camera designed for personal use. Flash, tripods, selfie sticks and other additional equipment are not allowed and all images/photographs must be for personal, non-commercial use only.

How do I arrange a photo shoot or filming in the Museum?
Members of the Media should contact the Media Relations Department at 773-947-0600 ext 228 to arrange shoots for broadcast/news purposes.

For commercial filming at The DuSable filmmakers are asked to submit a request in writing detailing all aspects of the project. Once the request has been approved the Museum has a standard location fee schedule based on the length of time crews will spend in the Museum. Upon approval of request, the fee schedule will be negotiated.

PRIVATE EVENTS

Does the Museum allow private events such as receptions and performances?
Yes, the DuSable Museum is available for private, corporate, individual, and not-for-profit events. Please contact the Special Events Department at 773-947-0600 ext 250 for rental rates and/or more information.

Am I allowed to prepare and provide the food and refreshments for my event?
The DuSable has a listing of approved and licensed caterers and event planners which must be used for all special event/ facility rentals
