Wanted: Professional driver to operate 8’ x 34’ educational vehicle

Job Profile and Description

DuSable Museum seeks a driver for our educational mobile museum outreach vehicle. The mobile museum outreach vehicle travels to schools, hospitals, senior citizen centers, festivals, etc. Driver is responsible for inspecting and driving vehicle to prescheduled venues and assisting people with safely boarding and departing from the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair lift and the driver is also responsible for the safe loading and unloading persons with disabilities.
All applicants must demonstrate the ability to drive vehicle safely and appropriately, including ability to read and interpret road signs; ability to read, understand, and adhere to the rules and regulations of the Federal Transit Administration and United States Department of Transportation.

Driver should also have an understanding of professional and appropriate engagement with the public; especially children. Applicant should also possess effective communication skills and maintain a professional appearance Driver should have reasonable knowledge of the operations and features of assigned vehicle(s); ability to recognize vehicle maintenance needs; ability to perform minor vehicle repairs. Driver is also responsible for understanding the contents of the mobile museum and assisting an outreach coordinator with interpreting the vehicle’s content to visitors. Certification in First Aid and CPR preferred but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
*Inspect vehicle for safety and follow the safety instructions;
*Be responsible for the condition of vehicle and look for any malfunctioning parts and knowledge of how to handle the vehicle in case of emergency;
*Be punctual and follow the schedule in order to transport vehicle to scheduled venue time;
*Obey and adhere to the rules of the road;
*Be conscientiuous about ensuring the safety of the passengers and persons in immediate proximity to the vehicle;
*Assist all passengers, including disabled, in and out of the vehicle; operates lift devices as needed;
*Read and interpret maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route to customer location and read/interpret road signs in English;
*Perform minor maintenance tasks on assigned vehicle(s) as required;
*Fuel the assigned vehicle(s);
*Coordinate with the Project Manager to schedule all major or periodic vehicle maintenance servicing;
*Respond immediately to accident or medical emergencies by notifying emergency response providers until emergency personnel arrive.
 
Requirements:
*A valid Illinois driver’s license
*A safe driving record
*A high school diploma or higher
*Willingness to undergo a background check and drug testing
*Strong work ethic and history of punctuality
