34th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival July 12 & 13


CHICAGO’S PREMIER AFRICAN AMERICAN SUMMERTIME EVENT: THE 34th ANNUAL DUSABLE MUSEUM ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL
SCHEDULED FOR JULY 12th and 13th

Chicago, IL. (26 June 2008) —-Mark your calendars, pack your sun-screen, round up your friends and relatives, gas up the car (or take public transportation) and head to the beautiful southside of Chicago to the country’s first African American History Museum on Saturday, July 12, 2008 and Sunday, July 13, 2008 from 12:00 NOON until 8:00 PM, when the DuSable Museum of African American History will present it’s world-renowned 34th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival. The event will take place at the Museum which is located at 740 East 56th Place (57th Street at South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago’s Washington Park. A fun-filled good time has been planned …and best of all, it’s FREE!

This annual celebration of art, words, music and dance showcases the creativity of African American artists in the community as a summer gallery is created in Washington Park. For 34 years, the DuSable Museum of African American History has produced and presented this festival which has gained international acclaim by showcasing local and national rising artists in a juried art show. The DuSable Museum’s Arts & Crafts Festival, which originated in 1974 as a showcase for local artists is a juried exhibition of fine art and unique hand crafted works which features artists working in fine arts and crafts that relate to African-American themes, identity, history and culture.

Guests may partake of a vendor marketplace offering hand made crafts, jewelry, dolls, books and clothing. There’s also live entertainment, educational seminars, book signings, films, affordable outdoor dining and family activities. Performers scheduled to entertain during the two-day event include: R&B violin sensation, Lee England, Jr.; Englewood’s Imani African Dance Troupe; Verbal Balance; The Family Reunion Band; S.P.I.R.I.T.S. All Women Gospel Group; New Generation Fancy Drill Team; Sax In The City; and the Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago.

In addition, parents will be able to receive FREE health screenings and back-to-school immunizations for their children, courtesy of the University of Chicago Hospitals; the Rainbow PUSH Coalition will be providing voter’s registration, Time-Out Chicago magazine will be holding a door-prize raffle , there will be a show of the latest fashions , and some of Chicago’s most innovative and exciting restaurants will be offering up delicious summer time cuisine.

Admission to the 34th Annual DuSable Museum Arts & Crafts Festival is FREE and the public is invited. The DuSable Museum is accessible by CTA buses # 3, # 4 and #55 and limited parking is also available on the premises.
