If anyone ever doubted the critical importance of learning our history, let the current news be an example. All people, Americans in particular, need to be educated on history, for their own benefit and for the benefit of future generations.

The DuSable Museum’s Board of Trustees and Staff are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Board Chairman, Patrick McGee. Patrick has been a dedicated and active board member since 2019, and was elected to the chairmanship in January 2023. He spearheaded The DuSable’s first Father-Daughter Dance in October 2023, an event which will be dedicated to Patrick’s memory in future years.
Patrick McGee was a loving husband, father, son, and brother. His dedication to his family and friends was unmatched and his desire to be an agent of change helped provide opportunities for countless people across the Chicagoland area. Whether it was through his career in banking, his work with the Board of Trustees of The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, or his love for his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc, Patrick used every chance possible to make an impact.
The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center mourns the loss of Patrick McGee. His calm and effective demeanor and his tireless service will be greatly missed.
In 2022, over Juneteenth weekend, The DuSable Museum of African American
History embarked on a transformative journey after more than 60 years, marking
a new era as The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center.
The new name serves as a powerful reiteration of our commitment to educate all
people about Black history, culture, and experiences. It also acknowledges the
rich tapestry of global connections and diverse cultures among Black people
across the Diaspora.
The DuSable Museum is proud of its diverse holdings that number more than 15,000 pieces and include paintings, sculpture, print works and historical memorabilia. Special exhibitions, workshops and lectures are featured to highlight works by particular artists, historical events or collections on loan from individuals or institutions.
